Free SUNY Maritime Conference

SUNY Maritime College will present the College’s 5th Annual Conference on Cutting Edge Issues in Shipping, Tuesday, February 2, 2010, the “Tiv,” McMurray Hall, Maritime College, Throggs Neck, N.Y.  Admission to the day-long seminar is free and it is hosted by the Maritime College Department of Global Business and Transportation. The day will begin with a complimentary continental breakfast at 8:00 a.m.  There will be morning and afternoon sessions.

Austin L. Dooley, President of the Society of Maritime Arbitrators, will present the keynote address at 1 p.m. Additional speakers include: Brite Gu, of Logistics Pan America, at 8:45 a.m., discussing the impact of recent economic times on the business of non-vessel owning common carriers;  James Perduto, Vice President, North America, for Ship Decision Technology, at 9:30 a.m., focusing on new technology and its impact on information overload in the maritime industry, and how to improve the efficiency of voyage management operations; at 10:15 a.m., Jeffrey Hirsch, Business Development, Joint Commands & Networks, Defense & Intelligence Agencies, IBM Global Business Services, will address the topic of countering  piracy with new technology, and at 11 a.m., Robert C. Meehan, tanker broker and partner at Eastport Maritime, a maritime arbitrator and member of the Society of Maritime Arbitrators, will discuss current issues in maritime arbitration of charter party and salvage disputes and proven methods to manage the costs associated with the resolution of disputes. The group will break for lunch at Noon and lunch may be purchased in the College’s dining room in Vander Clute Hall.

Following Austin Dooley’s 1 p.m. keynote address, SUNY Maritime College Professor Janis Schulmeisters, will speak at 2 p.m. and address developments in N.Y./N.J. Harbors. The day will conclude with Maritime Professor Jeffrey A. Weiss’s address at 3 p.m., on recent landmark legal decisions that have had a major impact on the use of maritime attachment and garnishment pursuant to Rule B of the Supplemental Rules of Civil Procedure.
