Thirumurthy Kamatchi, captain of the Malta-flagged oil product tanker Godavari Spirit, noticed that plastic water bottles onboard were increasing day by day. In order to properly dispose of the waste, bottles needed to be stored onboard until the vessel’s next docking.
Kamatchi decided to raise the matter at the regular Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Assurance (HSEQ) meeting and implement a program to address it.
With full support of the crew and shore staff, the vessel purchased stainless steel bottles for each crew member. The new bottles can be used for both hot and cold beverages and used in cabins and also carried on deck in a pouch if required.
According to the tanker’s owner Teekay, this initiative is an example of our seafarer’s commitment to the sustainability and Operational Leadership: thinking green – one water bottle at a time.
