USCG Searches for Man Over Board

The Coast Guard is searching for a 26-year-old Myanmarese crewmember reported to have fallen overboard from the 792-ft container ship Cap Gilbert approximately 450 miles south of Adak Island Jan. 25. The Coast Guard 17th District command center in Juneau was notified of the missing man at approximately 8:20 p.m. and issued an urgent marine information broadcast requesting the assistance of any vessels in the area.  A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew was launched at approximately 10:16 p.m. from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak.

The HC-130 aircraft arrived on scene at approximately 1 a.m. joining the crew of the Cap Gilbert in the search.  No signs of the man were found over night.  A second Hercules aircrew departed Air Station Kodiak at about 8 a.m. Jan. 27 and is expected to arrive on scene at about noon to continue the search.

Weather conditions at the time of the incident were 20-ft seas, 39 mph winds, 39 degree air temperature and 47 degree water temperature. The Cap Gilbert is a Liberia-flagged vessel sailing from Ningbo, China, to Manzino, Mexico.
