China Navigation & Swire Offshore Join World Ocean Council

August 30, 2012

Leading Asian shipping companies China Navigation & Swire Pacific Offshore expand the global industry alliance on ocean sustainability.

The China Navigation Co. Pte. Ltd (CNCo) and Swire Pacific Offshore Operations (Pte) Ltd (SPO), major international shipping companies based in the Asia-Pacific region, join leading companies from a range of industries as members of the World Ocean Council (WOC) - the international business leadership alliance on Corporate Ocean Responsibility.

Simon Bennett, General Manager for Sustainable Development for both companies, stated:

"Much of world trade depends on maritime transport to and from Asia.  The shipping industry has a significant role in ensuring its operations are safe and sustainable whilst not adversely affecting ocean health.  Both CNCo and SPO take this responsibility very seriously, and indeed both are targeting having zero negative environmental impact, but we also recognize the enhanced gain to be had by many other companies and industries in the whole shipping process working together on these issues."

"The World Ocean Council is extremely pleased to welcome both CNCo and SPO to our growing business alliance as the first major shipping lines to join from Asia," stated WOC Executive Director, Paul Holthus.  "The Asia Pacific region continues to be the centre of tremendous shipping industry activity.  Leadership and collaboration by the maritime transport sector - including the producers, manufacturers and distributors of commodities and products that are driving the shipping industry - are essential to tackling the ocean sustainability challenges and opportunities facing ocean industries," Holthus added.
