Carnival Cruise Ship Crashes in Baltimore

May 10, 2016

Carnival cruise ship Carnival Pride crashed on Sunday as it was docking in Baltimore, officials said.

No one was injured when the cruise ship  struck a raised passenger walkway as it was returning to Maryland from an eight-day trip to the Bahamas, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The 2,124-passenger Carnival Pride suffered minor damage during the incident but no one was injured. No one was on the gangway at the time. The ship was just pulling into the Port of Baltimore after an eight-day trip to the Bahamas.

Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer De La Cruz said passengers were able to get on and off Pride in the wake of the incident by using a separate crew gangway. The ship departed later in the day on its next voyage after a slight delay, she said.

According to eyewitnesses, the cruise ship seemed to approach the dock at an unusual angle, causing the mooring hatch, which extends over the side of the ship to collide with the gangway.

The ship has minor damage limited to a small mooring deck platform on the starboard side. Carnival said the ship is expected to sail as scheduled.

Port spokesman Richard Scher says the Carnival Pride is one of two cruise ships that have a home port in Baltimore.
