Four Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) employees were recognized for engineering excellence, April 7-9, by the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) at the society’s conference in Arlington, Va.
NAVSEA’s Capt. Albert Grecco, Craig Brandenburg, Stephen Michetti, and Christopher C. Bassler received awards for their accomplishments. NAVSEA develops, delivers and maintains ships and systems on time and on cost for the United States Navy.
Grecco received the Gold Medal Award for significant naval engineering contributions during the past five years.
“Congratulations [Capt. Albert Grecco] on receiving the Gold Medal Award. You've joined an elite group; having earned the well-deserved, hard-earned recognition of the naval engineering community for producing results ... for making a great difference in our Navy,” said Sean Stackley, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Research Development and Acquisition.
Brandenburg, Distance Support Customer Relationship Management Project Director at NAVSEA’s Naval Sea Logistics Center received the Clifford G. Geiger Award for his leadership and influence in the naval logistics community. He is recognized as a subject matter expert in configuration management, fleet support and for his ability to bring together diverse groups, including logisticians and engineers. Additionally, Brandenburg has also been a leader in the Navy logistics intern program, as a participant, graduate and as its management head.
Michetti, Weapons Handling and Stowage Systems branch head at Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock – Ship Systems Engineering Station (SSES), received the Frank G. Law Award for longtime dedication and service to the ASNE.
“Steve is a leader in the field of machinery engineering … from concept through in-service engineering and overseeing the resolution of many complex engineering challenges,” said Karen Dunlevy-Miller, Amphibious, Auxiliary and Sealift Acquisition branch manager at SSES.
Bassler, a naval architect at NAVSEA field activity Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock’s Seakeeping Division, received the Rosenblatt Young Naval Engineer Award. Bassler was recognized as making the most noteworthy contribution by a person under 35 years of age in the field of naval engineering.
“The Navy has been undergoing a substantial transformation,” said Bassler, “in hull form designs that are being considered to provide the capabilities for the future fleet. With this transformation in mind, the development and improvement of hydrodynamic technologies - analytical, numerical, and experimental - is essential to enable the Navy to design ships to meet these requirements.”
On March 17, ASNE also recognized NAVSEA’s Dr. Thomas J. Murphy, Executive Director, Norfolk Ship Support Activity, with the Frank C. Jones Award. This honor recognizes major maintenance and alteration achievements over a period of at least 10 years.
