Camenzuli Named to Federal Coast Guard Committee

 

The committee is responsible for advising the Secretary of Homeland Security about medical certifications for licenses and other merchant mariner documents; medical standards and guidelines for physical qualifications; medical examiner education standards; and medical research. The committee is composed of health-care professionals with experience working with merchant mariners or occupational medicine, and professional mariners.

 

“Health and safety are of utmost importance on board a vessel. Mariners work in an environment that can impose unique physical and medical demands, and they must be medically and physically fit to perform their duties,” Camenzuli said. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity and that people respect my ideas.”

 

She is the only person on the committee from one of the nation’s six maritime academies.

 

Camenzuli has been attending the committee’s meetings, which are open to the public, since she started working at Maritime three years ago. On campus, she is responsible for annual physicals for each of the college’s 1,200 students in the Coast Guard license program. For Camenzuli, the appointment will strengthen her ability to educate future mariners about the importance of health and wellness.

 

Camenzuli is the third person from Maritime to be appointed to a Coast Guard merchant marine committee.

 

Capt. Ernie Fink, dean of Professional Education and Training, is a member of the Merchant Marine Personnel Advisory Committee, which advises the Coast Guard on matters related to training, qualifications, certification, documentation and fitness.

 

Capt. Eric Johansson, professor of Marine Transportation, serves as the vice chair of the Towing Advisory Committee, which makes recommendations to the Coast Guard regarding safety in the tug and barge industry.
