Congressman Tim Bishop will deliver the commencement address when SUNY Maritime graduates its mid-year class Friday, January 31.
Maritime’s President, Dr. Michael Cappeto, said, “Congressman Bishop is a friend of higher education, transportation, the environment and Long Island Sound in particular – all critical interests of Maritime College – and we are delighted that he has agreed to address our January commencement.”
Approximately 100 students will receive Associate’s, Bachelor’s,or Master’s degrees during the ceremony, which is open by invitation only.
Approximately 60 of the January graduates will have also passed the examinations required for licensing by the US Coast Guard as Merchant Marine Officers. All were members of the College’s Regiment of Cadets – a requirement for licensing.
Five members of the January graduating class will also receive their NROTC commissions that day. SUNY Maritime hosts the largest Naval ROTC unit in New York State, and the only NROTC unit based in New York City.
First elected to Congress in 2002, Bishop represents New York’s First Congressional District, which spans the eastern end of Long Island. He is a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and serves as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. He has been among the House of Representatives’ strongest advocates for college access and affordability.
Congressman Bishop is among the 12th generation of Bishops to live on Long Island. He graduated from Southampton High School and holds a BA in History from Holy Cross and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Long Island University.
Founded in 1874, Maritime College is the oldest and largest maritime school in the country. Maritime enrolls approximately 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students at its campus on Throggs Neck in historic Fort Schuyler, Bronx, NY.
Maritime offers programs in engineering, naval architecture, marine transportation, maritime studies, marine environmental science, and international transportation and trade. Maritime students who elect to pursue a U. S. Coast Guard License participate in the College’s structured Regiment of Cadets, as well as summer sea terms aboard the Empire State VI training ship.
