Carleen Lyden-Kluss, Co-Founder and Executive Director of North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) has announced that GMS (USA) recently joined NAMEPA as a new member. GMS (USA) will participate with other marine industry organizations in NAMEPA’s efforts to “Save Our Seas”.
“GMS is focused on promoting sound environmental practices through responsible ship recycling, and shows this desire to do so by taking action and joining NAMEPA”, stated NAMEPA’s Carleen Lyden-Kluss. “The continued growth and membership diversity across the industry enables NAMEPA to extend our reach in collaborating on new strategies to protect the marine environment. Our members are committed to the stewardship and protection of our seas through corporate social responsibility and public education about protecting this valuable global resource.”
“When people consider the environmental impact of shipping, the majority think of emissions and pollution from ship operations. However, GMS believes that the whole vessel lifecycle needs to be understood – including ensuring the environmentally sound recycling of decommissioned vessels,” commented Evan Sproviero, Trader and Head of Projects, GMS, “It is our aim to turn green recycling into a norm, bettering the lives of shipyard workers and improving the environmental, social and commercial sustainability of yards. While it is yet to come into force, GMS strongly supports the standards laid out by the Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. We hope this collaboration with NAMEPA will raise awareness of the environmentally-responsible recycling, which is taking place at some yards already compliant with the regulation, and that it will incentivise investment in other yards around the world to ensure a safer, greener future.”
