Submerged Fishing Boat Located Off US E. Coast

January 13, 2013

Wreckage from the fishing boat 'Foxy Lady ll', which lost 2 crew, snagged by trawlers, later identified by US Coast Guard.

Coast Guard Sector Boston confirmed the discovery of the submerged wreckage of the 45-foot fishing vessel Foxy Lady II, reported missing with its two crew in December 2012.

Massachusetts Marine Environmental Police received multiple reports of fishing vessels becoming entangled on an underwater obstruction while trawling in areas between Provincetown, Mass., and Cape Ann, Mass.

Coast Guard Sector Boston investigators, along with assistance and equipment from Massachusetts Marine Environmental Police, began to assess the seabed. With the use of an underwater camera, the vessel was located and confirmed to be the Foxy Lady II.

Coast Guard Sector Boston investigators are currently working closely with state and local agencies to further investigate the area and will thoroughly assess the findings as a part of the incident investigation.

On Dec. 17, 2012, the Foxy Lady II and its two crewmembers were reported overdue. After a multi-day, multi-agency effort by aircraft, cutters, and rescue lifeboats, the Coast Guard’s active search and rescue operation was suspended having not located the vessel or crew. The location of the vessel’s wreckage is within the area searched in December. The Foxy Lady II was homeported in Gloucester, Mass.
