The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) will host a workshop on Marine Energy Efficiency for ships, tugs, ferries and OSVs at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, March 11-12.

With a focus on the theoretical and practical aspects of reducing vessel fuel consumption, the two-day workshop will feature technical discussions from a Webb Institute Professor of Ship Design and a representative of the Danish Shipowners Association, combined with presentations by the major suppliers of energy efficiency technologies, as well as naval architects at the leading edge of vessel design.

The keynote speaker, Jeff Lantz from the USCG, Chairman of IMO’s Council and lead of U.S. delegations to IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) and Marine Environmental Committee (MEPC), will provide an overview of IMO’s activities in this area.

Featured speakers from Scorpio Shipmanagement and Seacor will describe their real world experience with ECO ships and designing, building and operating energy efficient vessels. Measuring, monitoring and optimizing in-service performance will be the focus of a separate panel. Barriers to implementing energy saving technologies will be addressed by one of the authors of a recent study of the topic conducted for the EC.

Finally, the role of Classification Societies in Energy Efficiency beyond EEDI will be debated by representatives of ABS, Lloyds and DNV GL.
