Norwegian-headquartered ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist Optimarin said it has become the first manufacturer to offer a five-year parts and servicing guarantee. It’s a move that, according to CEO Tore Andersen, has the potential to redefine ship owners’ expectations from suppliers in this ultra-competitive sector.

Optimarin said such long-term plans are enabled by its backing from a stable group of investors, together with its considerable order book.

The Optimarin Ballast System is based on filtration as pretreatment and high doses of UV irradiation for inactivation of marine organisms, viruses and bacteria, without affecting the ship’s normal operations. Ballast water is UV treated both during ballasting and de-ballasting, but only filtered during ballasting.

Optimarin was the first firm to install a commercial system, back in 2000 on board the cruise ship Princess Regal, and the first to attain full USCG approval. It now has more than 330 of its units installed worldwide, of which over 150 are retrofits, with more than 520 confirmed orders.
