February 11, 2015

The first piece of steel was cut at MEYER WERFT in Papenburg, Germany for the construction of the first ship with the construction number S. 711 for Asian operator Star Cruises.

Tan Sri Lim, Chairman of Star Cruises, pushed the button of the plasma torch as the first plate of steel was cut by the plasma torch in the yard’s state of the art facility “laser center”.

Delivery of the ship is planned for fall 2016. The sister ship will be delivered in fall 2017. Both new ships for Star Cruises will be abt. 151, 000 gross tons each and have a capacity of approx 4.500 passengers.

Each ship is 324 m in length, 39.7 m in breadth and will reach a trail speed of abt. 23 knots. These new ships are designed for the fast growing Asian cruise market.

The management and project teams of Star Cruises and Meyer Werft took part at the ceremony for the first steel cut. “We are glad to continue the long lasting relationship, which starts 20 years ago with building of SuperStar Leo and now we build these new ships for Star Cruises”, says Bernard Meyer, managing partner of Meyer Werft.
