Johnson’s company, which has used FARO scanners since 2007, said that the modern scanner and resulting 3D digital plan is more efficient than “plumb bob and tape measure,” and importantly it allows for significant amounts of fabrication, welding and fitting before boarding the ship or rig for final install. “You can’t put an exact number on it, but using this technology will reduce drydock and construction costs,” Johnson said.
