The Coast Guard recently awarded Mr. James Farley a Meritorious Public Service Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to navigation safety, environmental stewardship and homeland security during his decades-long involvement with the American Waterways Operators (AWO).

This award is the Coast Guard’s second highest public service award, and was presented at the annual AWO business meeting in Washington, DC, in April.

Mr. Farley was applauded in a citation accompanying the award for his 40-year legacy of leadership for inland waterway safety initiatives focused on reducing crew fatigue and human error, policies and best practices for tows, and waterway improvements.

The citation also highlighted Mr. Farley’s advocacy in publishing industry safety statistics, his insightful approach to the development of enhanced tank barge emission controls, and his fortitude in fostering trusting partnerships with the Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, and a variety of state and local regulators.
