ERMA Bullish on Ballast Water Treatment

May 22, 2015

After having delivered several BWTS systems in Kita Nihon shipyard in Japan, one more ERMA FIRST BWTS was successfully installed onboard the Bulk Carrier M/V SCARABÉ(DWT: 60,000t), managed by NIOVIS SHIPPING COMPANY, which was built at Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES).

ERMA FIRST team performed successfully the commissioning within four days prior its official delivery to the yard, owner and class on April 25th. M/V SCARABÉ is the first of the three ships that will be equipped with ERMA FIRST BWTS under the contract that ERMA FIRST has signed with NIOVIS SHIPPING SA. M/V SCARABÉ is the first of the new series of such 60,000t DWT B/C from MES.

The installation of the System proves that major companies from Shipping and Shipbuilding Industry entrust ERMA FIRST, which over the last years has developed and offers reliable solutions for ballast water treatment.

The ERMA FIRST Ballast Water Treatment System, is a whole flow system which employs at first stage an advanced filtration and cyclonic separation system, during uptake, for the removal of larger organisms and sediment (up to 20 μm), followed by an electrolytic process based on the principal of electrochlorination for the complete elimination of the remaining viable organisms.

Treatment takes place only during ballasting. Remaining chlorine in the water is neutralized before discharge, by the use of a chlorine neutralizing agent.

As Evangelos Laliotis, Technical Manager of NIOVIS SHIPPING Co S.A., stated: “ERMA FIRST’ system has exceeded all of our expectations. This innovative system is not only effective and efficient but also user-friendly, making Ballast Water Treatment an easy, automated procedure. The quality of support, professionalism and diligence that ERMA FIRST has shown during all stages of the project is exemplary.”

ERMA FIRST BWTS was also praised by NIOVIS SHIPPING general Manager, Vassilios Sitaras, who expressed his satisfaction for the cooperation of the two companies, noting that the installation of the system will be the beginning of a long and trustworthy business relationship.
