DP World Increases Stake in Brazilian Port to 100%
DP World has completed the acquisition of an additional 66.67% stake in Empresa Brasileira de Terminais Portuários (Embraport) in Brazil from Odebrecht Transport (OTP). This transaction increases DP World’s shareholding to 100% and the terminal will be rebranded to DP World Santos. DP World Santos is the largest Brazilian private multi-modal port terminal and operates in the Port of Santos, which is the busiest container port in Latin America handling 3.4m TEU in 2016 and has strategic access to sea, road and rail, and 90% of the cargo is destined for Brazil’s most populous city, São Paulo.
Port of Antwerp Lands New Banana Contract
The CMA CGM vessel Pointe des Colibris called at the Belgian New Fruit Wharf (BNFW) terminal in Antwerp on February 1 carrying among other things bananas from Suriname. These will be distributed via the port of Antwerp to the local market and to surrounding countries. The owner of the bananas is FAI, fruit partner of Greenyard, based in Sint-Katelijne-Waver (Belgium). For carrying the bananas Greenyard has signed a new contract with the CMA CGM shipping company, with one of the crucial factors being the direct call at the BNFW fruit terminal in Antwerp.
Hapag-Lloyd Warns of Preventive Actions by China
Further to Hapag-Lloyd's information to their Customer circular issued in 4th March 2016 on the preventive actions of Zika virus for all cargoes entering China, the company has now provided an updated list of origin countries. All shipments from the following countries (indicated below) shall be subject to anti-mosquito treatment. Inbound shipments without proof of anti-mosquito treatment will be fumigated at the port of discharge in China by the authorities without prior notice.

DP World has won a 50 year concession for the development of a greenfield multi-purpose port project at Posorja, Ecuador, 65 kilometres from the country’s main business city of Guayaquil. The $500 million initial investment (Phase 1) will include the purchase of land, dredging of a new access channel, a 20 kilometre access road and a 400 metre berth equipped to handle containers and other cargo. Construction is expected to start within the next six to nine months and take around 24 months to complete, resulting in 750,000 TEU (twenty-foot container equivalent) of capacity.

Jamaica Hosts CMOU Port State Control Committee
Minister of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies, MP, will be giving the opening address at the 19th annual meeting of the Caribbean Port State Control Committee (CPSCC 19), put on by the Secretariat of the Caribbean Memorandum of Understanding (CMOU) which begins with an official ceremony on June 23, 2014 at the Holiday Inn Sun Spree Resort in Montego Bay. The Secretariat of the CMOU is located at the offices of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) in Kingston. As Jamaica’s maritime administration, the MAJ takes very seriously its port State control responsibilities.
Statoil Stakes Claim Offshore Suriname
Statoil has acquired a 30% participating interest in block 47 offshore Suriname from Tullow Oil. Tullow Oil operates the block 47 licence offshore Suriname with 100% working interest. Tullow will retain the operatorship and 70% working interest. The agreement is subject to approval from Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname, the state oil company of Suriname. Block 47 lies in a frontier area in the Guyana Basin. The licence is located some 270 kilometres north of mainland Suriname, with a water depth of between 1,300 and 3,000 metres.
Mid America Delivers Three Tugs to MNO
Mid America Shipyards LLC, out of Ft. Smith, Ark., has just delivered three tug boats to MNO operating out of Suriname in South America. Two of the vessels are 31.5 ft long by 14 ft wide with a hull depth of 5.5 ft and an eye level of 1.8 ft. Each vessel is equipped with two Cummins engines QSL9 at 330 hp each continuous duty, provided by Mid South Cummins. These 660 hp tugs came complete with living quarters featuring a set of bunk beds, toilet, sink, shower, refrigerator, hotplate, air conditioning, 9 KW gen set, two 10 ton winches, 3-inch shafts and 38-inch props.
