Canada Makes Marine Atlantic Board Appointment

Sharon R. Duggan has been appointed to the board of Marine Atlantic Inc. by the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities.

Marine Atlantic Inc. is a federal Crown corporation that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. The corporation provides a constitutionally mandated passenger and commercial marine transportation service between the Island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia. Its mission is to provide a safe, environmentally responsible and quality ferry service in a reliable and cost-effective manner.

"I am pleased that Ms. Duggan has agreed to serve on the board of Marine Atlantic," said Minister Lebel. "Her wealth of experience in human resources and labour relations, and her skills in financial and change management, will greatly benefit the corporation."

Ms. Duggan is a retired executive, having worked in telecommunications at Bell Aliant, one of North America's largest communications providers, in Newfoundland. She most recently served as vice-president of customer service transformation and development at Bell Aliant in St. John's from 2005 to 2008. Previously, Ms. Duggan was vice-president of human resources at Aliant and director of human resources at Newtel Communications (Aliant).

Ms. Duggan also serves her community as the lead for human resources initiatives for the board of United Way of Newfoundland and Labrador. She was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International in 2007. Ms. Duggan holds a master of business administration from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
