NYK welcomes 48 new employees

 

Extending a warm welcome the NYK president Tadaaki Naito  congratulated the new staff members, He informed that this year, NYK will celebrate its 133rd year of business. While overcoming many difficulties in its long history, NYK has flexibly adjusted its business form to meet the demands of the age. 

 

He pointed out that over the past 30 years, in order to address globalization and structural changes in the maritime industry, the company established many overseas subsidiary companies and joint ventures with foreign local partners. The number of affiliated companies expanded from 36 companies to 925, and the composition of group employees has changed dramatically. As a result thirty years ago, most employees were Japanese, but Japanese currently account for only 20 percent of NYK office workers and 15 percent of seafarers.

 

“National staff who work at NYK Group companies overseas are now the backbone of the Group," he stated. "You will work together with colleagues who have diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The key point to working together smoothly is communication capability. Please keep in mind that non-verbal communication may be needed to demonstrate your endeavors and feelings and to convey your ideas. Appealing to others through your personal magnetism is also very important, as is explaining logically through language, or verbal communication.

 

“I also hope that you always have a sense of curiosity about things that you encounter. Don’t always swallow information you receive from the public domain or the internet, and make a practice of considering deeply by yourself the essence of any information. This habit can reward you with skills of observation and insightful acumen that can benefit your career in the future.

 

Introducing them to a famous passage by Iwasaki Yataro, the company’s founder he read, ‘If we provide one ship, it will bring more convenience to the world, and the profit will benefit many people. Of course, NYK pursues profits as a profitable company, but our business is also to support society and life." He advised them to realize the NYK Group’s significance and social mission and hoped that they keep the founder's words in mind as take on the challenge to fulfil this mission.
