Crowley awarded three Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships to California Maritime Academy students Alesi Alapa, Todd Michel and Sean Sabeh during the Containerization and Intermodal Institute's Connie Awards presentation in Long Beach, Calif. On Oct. 1.

Chris Peterson, Crowley's vice president of marine operations and also a former Cal Maritime graduate, presented the exemplary students with the scholarship awards. Alapa, Michel and Sabeh were all recognized for their strong academic records, financial need and for their interest in a maritime career.

A native and lifelong resident of Hawaii, Alapa is the first person in her family to ever graduate from a four-year college. She is in her fifth and final year at Cal Maritime and is majoring in marine engineering technology and is a member of the Honors Society for Engineers.

Michel, a senior, is seeking his second bachelor's degree in marine transportation. A native of New Orleans, La., Michel is in his third year at Cal Maritime and has always been interested in the maritime industry. His goal is to sail on inland waters onboard tugboats or supply vessels.

Sabeh, who grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, is in his fourth year at Cal Maritime. He is a member of the deck officer program at the academy and his goal after graduation is to become a licensed deck officer.

The recent Crowley scholarships are part of Crowley's lengthy and ongoing commitment to education. Over the years, Crowley Chairman, President and CEO, Tom Crowley Jr., has directed the company to present scholarship dollars to deserving students at the maritime academies and other select institutions in the U.S., Caribbean and Central America in the name of his father Thomas B. Crowley Sr., who guided the company to extraordinary heights before passing away in 1994.

Since 1984, Crowley has provided more than half-a-million dollars in scholarship funding for more than 200 students studying at maritime academies and other select institutions. In 2006, the program expanded to Central America and to date has provided financial assistance to more than 20 students in that region.
