ICE to Present at RINA Conference

January 19, 2016

The ICE group of companies, Europe's largest independent naval architecture and marine engineering consultancy, will present a paper at RINA’s Maritime Project Management Conference in London on February 24-25 2016.

Presented by Robert Swan, President and Chief Operating Officer of ICE and co-authored by Steinar Draegebo, Chairman of the ICE group of companies, the paper will cover the complexities of project management in the ship design sector. It will focus on the project management system that ICE has built up over the last decade that enables it to efficiently manage complex marine design contracts for demanding clients in the shipbuilding, defence and offshore energy sectors.

The paper will also address the complexities of managing multifaceted projects involving specialist subcontractors undertaking work packages across the globe. In one recent drill ship contract, ICE had to coordinate technical teams in three different continents, integrate technical data for more than 8,000 pieces of equipment from suppliers world-wide, and handle numerous client-imposed changes. The project design output included structural details for 250 hull blocks built at several sites, design of 85 piping systems involving 37,000 pipe spools, nearly 600 kilometres of cables, six kilometres of HVAC ducting and about 100,000 documents. Well-defined responsibility matrices and communication protocols, an efficient document management system, weekly project monitoring, state-of-the-art software enabling distributed engineering and extensive use of video-conferencing were major features of the project, which at peak engaged 250 of ICE’s naval architects and professional engineers.
