NAMEPA to Host "Resources and Readiness in Alaska" Seminar

July 26, 2011

District 17 Commander RADM Tom Ostebo will be a keynote speaker at a “Resources and Readiness in Alaska” seminar to be presented by the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) on August 18th in Anchorage at the Captain Cook.  The seminar is part of NAMEPA’s Environmental Intelligence in Maritime Seminar series and will begin at 1:00PM with an introduction by NAMEPA Founding Chairman Clay Maitland.

“NAMEPA is keenly interested in the readiness of industry to protect natural resources as resource extraction moves into sensitive and challenging areas,” stated Maitland.  “We believe the companies and organizations involved in this extraction need to adequately protect the environment, particularly as the difficulty mounts.  This event is designed to allow those companies to discuss their extraction strategies, as well as provide information on their strategies for protecting the marine environment.”

RADM Ostebo, who arrived in District 17 in May of this year, is responsible for all Coast Guard Operations throughout Alaska which includes protecting life and property, enforcing federal laws and treaties, preserving the living marine resources, and promoting national security.  He will be addressing “Federal Policy on Readiness and its application to Alaska.”

Charles Parks of Tesoro Petroleum, Dr. Ian Dutton of the Alaska SeaLife Center, a representative from the University of Alaska, and key representatives from offshore drilling, cruise, response and fisheries industries will join government, environmental groups and native organizations to discuss Alaska’s vast resources and its readiness position.  Mayor Dan Sullivan is also expected to welcome the delegates.

There is no fee for the seminar, but delegates must register as attendance is limited. Contact [email protected] to register or call +203 255 4686.
