Maritime Environmental Mgmt, Distance Learning

January 21, 2010

A new training course has been announced by Lloyd’s Maritime Academy. The Certificate in Maritime Environmental Management is a 12-week course offering a thorough introduction to the management of the maritime environment – totally delivered by distance learning. This unique programme starts on 29 March 2010 and is currently enrolling at Lloyd’s Maritime Academy

The Certificate in Maritime Environmental Management is endorsed by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) as contributing to Continuing Professional Development. Directed by Dr. Anthony Gallagher of Southampton Solent University, the programme is designed for those seeking a comprehensive grounding in all aspects of this complex and globally significant discipline.

The course starts with an introduction to the principles underpinning maritime environmental management before examining the numerous environmental impacts associated with maritime operations. It explores the concepts of risk and precaution, then offers a thorough and up to date account of the many laws, codes and regulations governing the maritime environment, and the associated issues of compliance and enforcement which are so crucial to maritime organisations. The course goes on to present various planning tools and systems which are central to the management of the maritime environment, before demonstrating how the effectiveness of these systems can be measured, and their economic impact determined.
