Over the July 2-3 weekend , 25 teams from companies across the maritime sector took part in the ultimate challenge, better known as the ‘24 Peaks Challenge’. In doing so, they succeeded in raising an incredible £110,000 ($146,000) in support of seafarers in need.

The annual event is organized by the charity, Seafarers UK, and the teams and the 120 or so participants involved had to orienteer across the 24 highest peaks in the Lake District in 24 hours, with all the peaks along the way being over 2,400 feet.

“It’s an incredibly tough event, but it’s one of the best team-building experiences out there, with everyone doing their bit to support their team all the way to the end”, said Nigel Shattock, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Seafarers UK. “We are so thankful to all the companies that took part this year, both for their physical commitment and their fantastic fundraising.”

At the post-event awards evening on Sunday, every team was presented with a certificate and a rousing cheer; but, on the night, Peel Ports (team No.1) received the Top Fundraiser Award, with over £7,500 ($9,900) raised at the time, and Teekay Shipping received the Ambassadors Award for encouraging the most teams from across the industry to sign up to the challenge.

“There is overall agreement that it was the hardest thing any of us have ever done”, said the EA Gibson Team. “It was good to be sharing this not just as a team, but also with the other groups, encouraging each other along the way.”
