Korean Registry Okays Transas ECDIS

July 30, 2015

Transas, one of the world's leading providers of integrated navigation solutions, received ECDIS type-approval from the Korean Registry (Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute), making Transas one of a few companies holding an ECDIS certificate from the South Korean maritime authority.

The certificate issued by the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute proves the system's compliance with all ECDIS-related regulations valid for the South Korean Flag state and covers not only Navi-Sailor ECDIS in Premium and Standard configurations, but also all Transas supplementary components for usability benefits and system integration. All tests were successfully passed within one week at the certified Transas R&D facilities.

The certification was followed by two ECDIS contracts carried out in cooperation with Transas's local partner Arion Communication.

The world's renowned Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS from Transas will be delivered to nine Dong-A Tanker's vessels with an option to extend to dual ECDIS and to roll out ECDIS implementation on more than 20 vessels with Transas Admiralty Data Service (TADS) for delivery of official digital charts and updates.

The systems will be installed and supported locally by the Arion Communication and its subsidiary, Sealink Electronics in Busan. Transas and Sealink have built a training and service center in Busan where most of Korean major shipping companies have their bases.

"We have considered various factors which may affect operational costs in the next 5 years, like ECDIS implementation, crew training, maintenance and data services. The most important factor is that our captains and crews, who have already experienced using various brands of ECDIS, are very satisfied with the Navi-Sailor system from Transas" commented Minhan Ahn, executive director of Dong-A Tanker.

Another contract was signed with Woolim Shipping, a premium shipping company from Korea that started its operations back in 1983. The order includes supply of the Transas Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS Premium with Radar Overlay for ten Oil & Chemical Tankers through the Arion/Sealink Communication. Woolim Shipping currently owns 22 Oil & Chemical Tankers.
