JNPT Installs ECIL's Radiological Detection Equipment

July 9, 2015

P.Sudhakar, Chairman & Managing Director, Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) handed over a critical homeland security system - Radiological Detection Equipment (RDE) to Neeraj Bansal, Chairman In charge, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Mumbai in presence of Dr. R.K.Sinha, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy at an impressive function at JNPort today. JNPort is the largest container port in India handling the major container traffic of the country.

JNPort has further equipped itself in handling all kinds of cargo as per international safety standards by installing this Radiological Detection Equipment (RDE). This security system would neither be a hindrance to the moving cargo nor will add another security clearance layer. RDE is mainly detection device that provides a passive, non-intrusive means to screen containers and pedestrians for the presence of nuclear and radioactive materials. This equipment alerts security personnel by means of audio/visual alarms locally and remotely. A camera which is part of the equipment records the number plate of the vehicle / image of the person in the event of alarm. The alarm events can also be sent as SMS alert on mobile to respective seaport and DAE authorities. These equipment are connected to centrally located control room to monitor and maintain the history of the events.

JNPT handles 80% of cargo by road transport and accordingly in the first phase the Radiological Detection Equipment has been installed at the points to check the truck containers. In the second phase all rail containers will also be scanned, for the Port to become 100% secure in handling radioactive materials. ECIL has already trained the CISF persons on this equipment and provided the operating procedures for the same to stabilize this process.

Dr R K Sinha complimented JNPT for deploying Radiological Detection Equipment at the Port, which is a gateway port of the nation. He said that installation of this equipment strengthens the National Security and promotes compliance to International agreements enabling trade.
