India’s naval might was on full display off the coast of Visakhapatnam today (Saturday) as President Pranab Mukherjee reviewed the naval fleet.
Mukherjee, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, was accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, among others at International Fleet Review (IFR)-2016.
Close to 75 Indian warships and 24 from Navies across the globe sailed past the Presidential yacht- INS Sumitra.
President reviewed the international parade of fleets at the IFR-2016 here where 50 countries have come together to participate in this show of prowess and preparedness by the Indian Navy.
Speaking after reviewing the fleet, President Mukherjee said the event has brought together navies from across the globe, signifying "our common desire to use the seas to promote peace, cooperation and friendship."
Along with warships from across the world, Indian navy is displaying its firepower and blue sea capabilities in this event.
Close to 4000 sailors participated in the fleet review- perceived to be the biggest so far in India. The first international review had taken place in 2001 in which navies of 29 countries from across the globe had participated.
The list of participating navies includes the US, China, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Canada, Russia, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Peru, Chile, Colombia and Brazil.
Visakhapatnam emerged as a choice for hosting the country’s second IFR in tune with aspects of “Look East and Act East policy” of the government and since it provided excellent depth. In the first IFR in 2001 off Mumbai 29 countries participated. Around 100 ships — 71 Indian and 24 foreign vessels — are participating in the current IFR.
