Press release - The Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST) has demonstrated its commitment to the next generation of marine professionals by offering free student membership to all students (undergraduate and postgraduate), cadets and apprentices for the duration of their studies or training.

This offer is available to students on all courses in which marine activities have an influence, such as environmental sciences, geography and offshore renewables, as well as the traditional subjects associated with the marine sector.

Student membership includes access to a huge range of resources including the Virtual Library (an online collection of academic journals, magazines, reports, eBooks and proceedings) and the internationally recognized industry magazine, the Marine Professional. These resources supplement their studies or training and help to support students transitioning into the workplace through various internships and events. Student members also have access to financial support in the form of awards and scholarships.

"Investment in people is key to safeguarding the future of the global marine industry. This brilliant initiative puts the next generation of marine professionals in excellent stead to enter the industry through the skills, knowledge and opportunities made available to them through free student membership," commented Professor John Chudley, PhD CEng FIMarEST, Provost, Warsash Maritime Academy.

Students are already benefiting from this fantastic initiative, Blair Easton, SIMarEST, a Marine Biology student at Heriot-Watt University recently attended a fully funded IMarEST CPD approved course hosted by Whalefish, a research and conservation organisation. "I made connections that I can develop and contact once I am ready to start my career."

This initiative forms part of the Sea Your Future strategy which has been designed to inspire school-aged children to join the marine sector, support those studying and training and develop marine professionals throughout their career by providing professional qualifications such as Chartered Scientist or Chartered Engineer.
