Giant CMA CGM Ship Vasco De Gama Runs Aground

 

The damages of the  2015-built, 17,859 teu giant vessel are being assessed. There is no news on the damage as of yet.  During the accident there were no injured people and no water pollution.

 

The ship was refloated within an hour and proceeded to the port where an underwater survey will be conducted.

 

The local authorities reported that traffic in the area was not affected by the grounding of ultra large container ship.  The investigation for the root cause of grounding is under way.

 

The ultra large container ship was built in 2015 by Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding in China.

 

Named after the famous Portuguese explorer, the Vasco De Gama is one of the world’s largest boxships - Explorer class container ship - and was travelling ton Southampton from Algeciras.
