Fisherman Medevaced West of Unpqua River

July 9, 2016

A Coast Guard aircrew medevaced a 52-year-old male experiencing symptoms of a possible heart attack 34 miles west of the Umpqua River, Friday.

An aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station North Bend hoisted the mariner at 4:30 p.m. and transported him to emergency medical services personnel waiting at North Bend Airport.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend received a request for assistance at approximately 3 p.m. after a crewmember aboard the fishing vessel Clipper III collapsed.

“Our aircrews train regularly to conduct hoists on the water and our rescue swimmers are certified emergency medical technicians," said Lt. Wesley Jones, pilot of the Dolphin rescue helicopter. "This aircrew, alongside our partner first responders, successfully worked together in a timely manner to get this man the care he needed."

The patient was transferred to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay and his condition is unknown at this time.
