In operation for just three months, New York City’s new ferry service has already moved more than a million passengers.

The new ferry service, NYC Ferry, commenced in May, serving Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, with a Bronx connection scheduled for next year. Already, it is off to a great success with very high demand from riders.

“We just broke one million rides on @ NYC Ferry….we’re changing the game for more New Yorkers,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted.

The first two vessels were delivered only three months ago, and already it has expanded to 14 vessels with more on the way. In fact, the service has proved so popular that on weekends some passengers have had to wait hours to board.

“We’re ecstatic to celebrate reaching such a momentous millstone so quickly after launching the service for New Yorkers,” said Junior Volpe, Director of Special Projects. “The ferry is definitely becoming the preferred way to travel across the East River.”

The ferries were constructed at two U.S. shipyards, Metal Shark and Horizon Shipbuilding. Incat Crowther is the designer behind the vessels, supplying 3D production engineering. As a result, each class of vessel is exactly duplicated, and can be built efficiently and in record time.
