MPA Chief to Keynote SOS 2015

November 2, 2015

Mr Tan will provide the opening keynote address for the World Ocean Council’s Sustainable Ocean Summit, (SOS), 9-11 November 2015.

MPA Chief Executive Mr Andrew Tan stated, “Singapore is honoured to host the first Sustainable Ocean Summit to be held in Asia. With growing interest in ocean governance, this Summit will provide a good overview of the key challenges and prospects facing the management of our oceans, which covers more than 70% of the earth’s surface, provides an important source of resources, and plays an integral role in many of the earth’s systems, including climate and water.”

Mr Tan added that, “We encourage leadership companies from the ocean business community - especially those here in Singapore - to attend this important global gathering of ocean industries that is uniquely focused on international, cross-sectoral collaboration on Corporate Ocean Responsibility.”

In reflecting on the unique nature of the WOC, he added, “Ensuring that responsible maritime businesses are contributing to maintaining a healthy global ocean requires a global, multi-sectoral effort. As an international multi-industry alliance, the World Ocean Council creates the opportunity for responsible maritime industry operators to collaborate with like-minded peers from other sectors in tackling the shared sustainable development challenges affecting the future of all ocean economic activity.”

The WOC distinguishes the SOS as a “working conference”, i.e. the event discussions are documented and then help shape WOC workplans, priorities and actions - as part of the ongoing efforts of WOC to support its Members and the broader ocean business community to advance “Corporate Ocean Responsibility”.
