Wishing to enhance their elegibility for jobs in Western Canada's expanding shipbuilding industry, a group of University of British Columbia (UBC) Mechanical Engineering students approached SSI about further training in the company's ShipConstructor CAD/CAM application. The developers responded by putting on a special training course for them, plus access to the software.

The students had found ShipConstructor software to be the industry production standard at the Canadian marine design offices where they were serving internships, for instance at STX Canada Marine and Robert Allan Ltd.

SSI says it was delighted to assist the students by providing them with educational versions of its software, it also put on a special 3-day training course at the company's Victoria headquarters that was taught by Consulting Services Manager Steve Ivison.

"Awesome. The training was just perfect," said student Ross Titman.

He and his colleagues appreciated the fact they were getting trained by someone with such an extensive amount of practical knowledge of ship design and production; Ivison has over 42 years' experience working in the industry and prior to his job at SSI he worked at 13 shipyards, in 6 countries on 3 continents.

To sum up their feeling about the course, the students presented SSI with a card saying:

"Dear SSI and ShipConstructor Team
Thank you all for the incredible support and training. The opportunity to get leading edge industry exposure is not always possible while doing an undergraduate degree. However, your support will undoubtedly be an asset as we progress towards professional careers in the field of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. So thank you and the entire team for your support."

About SSI
