Two of SUNY Maritime’s spring graduates received the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award.
Jawad Azam, who studied electrical engineering, and La’Quey Smith, marine transportation, were among 248 students from the 64 SUNY campuses to be recognized.
“We are so proud of Jawad and La’Quey, not only for receiving this award but for everything they have done at SUNY Maritime,” said Irene R. Delgado, dean of student affairs and associate provost. “They have been exceptional advocates for the student body and their work here will have a lasting impact.”
Azam, of Bayshore, New York, took time away from SUNY Maritime to enlist in the Air Force reserves, and upon his return, balanced being a full-time student with military service. He came to the college through the educational opportunity program, which provides access, academic support and financial aid to promising students who many not otherwise be able to attend a university.
On campus, Azam was on the dean’s list for three semesters, served as a resident assistant, completed an internship with the college power plant, and worked for the Office of Student Affairs. He was also active in student government and served as treasurer for two years.
Smith, of the Bahamas, spent three years working as a custom broker for an import/export company before enrolling at SUNY Maritime. In addition to her studies, she chose to pursue a U.S. Coast Guard license, which qualifies her to be part of the U.S. Merchant Marine. In pursuit of the license, she was a member of the college regiment of cadets, and rose through the ranks to become the regimental commander of cadets her senior year, responsible for the care, policies and discipline of almost 1,300 cadets.
She was a member of the crew team and listed on the admiral’s and athletic director’s honor rolls throughout most of her academic career.
The chancellor’s awards are given annually to recognize students for their academic excellence, leadership, campus involvement and other achievements. It is the highest honor bestowed to students by the university system.
“These students are exceptional leaders, founders, helpers and athletes,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The achievements of these students reflect not only their impressive hard work and dedication, but the support of their families and friends and SUNY’s world-class faculty and staff.”
