Crowley Maritime Corporation awarded $2,500 Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships to University of North Florida (UNF) students Camilo Garcia and Danijel Hadziavdic at a scholarship luncheon yesterday. Crowley’s Katy Keene, manager of employee programs and Angela Urso, program coordinator, human resources were in attendance as Garcia and Hadziavdic were recognized for their academic excellence and enrollment in UNF’s transportation and logistics program.

Garcia will graduate this spring with a double major in transportation and logistics and business management, along with a minor in economics. He was born and raised in Colombia but came to UNF to be a part of the men's soccer team.  As a member of the Transportation and Logistics Society, Garcia completed his summer internship in supply chain and operation for Cargill Incorporated’s animal nutrition business unit.  Currently, Garcia is working as a project assistant for the PGA Tour in Ponte Vedra, Fla.

Hadziavdic, originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, is also a senior majoring in transportation and logistics.  He is a member of the Transportation and Logistics Society, Coggin Ambassador program and Coggin Mentor program and has completed several internships with Coach, GE Capital, Crowley and Total Military Management.  Following graduation this spring, he plans to pursue his master’s degree along with a career in transportation.

“Crowley is proud to participate in the education of these bright young students through this scholarship award,” said Keene.  “These deserving scholars could quite possibly be the business leaders of tomorrow, and we wish them much success.”

Crowley has provided scholarship aid to UNF students since 1998. To qualify, students must be majoring in transportation or logistics, obtain a predetermined grade point average (GPA) and possess leadership skills identified by the college and by Crowley.

Since 1984, Crowley has provided more than $3 million dollars in scholarship funding for more than 1,000 students. The company has also donated more than $2 million over the years to support other educational programs.  In 1994, Chairman and CEO Tom Crowley Jr., established the Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship Program in honor of his father who led the company to extraordinary heights before passing away in 1994. The company continues to give scholarship dollars to deserving students in the U.S., Alaska and Puerto Rico. In 2006, the program was expanded to Central America and to date, has provided financial assistance to 20 students in that region.
