New York State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) will address and preside over SUNY Maritime College’s Indoctrination (INDOC) graduation on Saturday, August 22, the college announced today.

Senator Klein will address new students, their parents, family members, friends and supporters of the college, as 340 MUGS (Mariners Under Guidance) participate in graduation exercises marking the completion of their INDOC period. The swearing-in ceremony and Pass-in-Review by the incoming class will take place at Reinhart Athletic Field.

“I am so pleased to have Senator Jeff Klein join me and the college community for this important event,” said Rear Adm. Michael Alfultis, President of SUNY Maritime College. “The Senator has been an enthusiastic supporter of the college in many ways and just one year ago secured a $1.5 million state grant that will go toward the building of a new state-of-the art Seamanship Center on our pier,” he added. “I look forward to publically acknowledging and thanking Senator Klein for his efforts to advance opportunities for students in the Bronx.”

INDOC is a 10-day mandatory program for all new students who wish to participate in the Regiment of Cadets. It prepares cadets for the physical rigors of life at the college and at sea, and instructs and introduces them to the college's regimental rules and traditions. INDOC also exposes the new cadets to self-discipline, a rapid assimilation of information and places the focus on developed teamwork. Throughout the first year the training received during the Indoctrination period is reinforced and supplemented by additional professional training; academic performance is strongly emphasized and closely monitored.
