Port Hosts 2nd Annual Career Day

July 18, 2013

The Port of Hueneme held a Maritime Career Exploration Day at the Port on Wednesday.

Attendees came to meet and talk with representatives of a half dozen companies doing business at the Port, groups that represented everything from a major shipping line to GAPS, an automobile processors. The event was held at the Port’s newly renovated Joint Operations and Security Center just outside the Port’s main entrance. In addition to the table displays, presentations were made by representatives of Del Monte, which imports fresh fruit through the Port, the Port administration and a recruiter for the National Maritime Academy at Kingspoint New York.

The Career Exploration Day was the brainchild of Commissioner Jason Hodge. “This was a great opportunity for the port community to reach out to the broader community at large,” said Hodge. “It’s not just about forklifts, trucks and working on the docks. There are lots of careers tied to freight movement and the port is an important hub of a much broader wheel.”

The career fair was designed to highlight some of the 5,000 jobs that port users and customers generate each year.

In addition to Del Monte and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, Port customers and associates who attended the event included Ryder Logistics, Chiquita, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Channel Island Cold Storage, the California Maritime Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) Port Stevedore Ports America and Global Auto Processing Services or GAPS.
