NYSED Awards SUNY Maritime $1.8 Million

July 26, 2013

The SUNY Maritime College announce that it has been awarded $1.8 million in grants from the New York State Education Department (NYSED)as part of the federally funded 21st Century Community Learning Center Program.

The College will receive two grants over the course of three years (2013-2015), to deliver after-school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment programs in two high schools in the Bronx: Banana Kelly and Jane Addams High School for Academic Careers. Only 125 grants were awarded in New York State and SUNY Maritime received two of them.

The goal of the program is to create or expand community learning centers and provide academic enrichment and youth development opportunities for students attending schools that serve a high percentage of low-income families.

With this grant, SUNY Maritime College said it will partner with the nonprofit, Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation (SASF), one of the largest providers of school-based after-school programs in New York City and the metropolitan region.

“Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are at the core of Maritime’s degree programs,” said Maritime’s President, Rear Admiral Wendi B. Carpenter, USN, (Ret.). “This exciting new program is a tremendous way for SUNY Maritime College to open new doors of opportunity for young people in the Bronx.” SASF CEO, James R. O’Neill, noted that “students will begin to see science and math come alive, as it relates to the rivers and oceans that surround us. As New Yorkers, we are all very connected to the maritime environment.”
