Mazurek is '2015 Coast Guard Engineer of the Year'

November 19, 2014

Dr. David Mazurek, a civil engineering professor at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, has been named the winner of the 2015 U.S. Coast Guard Engineer of the Year Award.

Mazurek was selected from a strong and diverse pool of exceptional nominees based on his educational, professional, and personal achievements. An expert in structural analysis and design who has served as an Academy civil engineering professor for more than 24 years, he has taught mechanics and structural engineering to an entire generation of U.S. Coast Guard Civil Engineers.

In addition to serving on the Academy faculty, Mazurek authored two of the bestselling engineering textbooks in the world.  The sole author of Beer & Johnston Statics and co-author of Beer & Johnston Mechanics of Materials, his textbooks are translated into several languages and are sold throughout North and Central America, Europe and Asia.

"It has been a distinct privilege to serve as a faculty member at the Coast Guard Academy these past 24 years," said Mazurek.  "Working together with a most talented, dedicated, and collegial faculty and staff to deliver an undergraduate engineering program of the highest quality to cadets of exceptional ability, there is nothing else I would rather be doing.  I am deeply honored and most grateful to receive this award, as it represents in a very special way the Coast Guard’s endorsement and recognition of my service."

Mazurek is a registered professional engineer in Connecticut and Pennsylvania and a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He also holds a key leadership role in the American Railway Engineering & Maintenance of Way Association, leading efforts to keep railroad bridges structurally safe and maintained.
