MPA Launches New Training Facility

October 20, 2015

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has launched a new training facility in its academy. The new training facility is in the PSA Building along with many other MPA’s divisions, making the facility more accessible to MPA officers.

“Training is a common denominator for all maritime administrations," said MPA chief executive Andrew Tan. "If you look around the world, in this complex environment, there is a great need for us to invest more in developing our people, and make sure they know what to do under all circumstances."

The new facility was opened in conjunction with the start of the 5th Maritime Public Leaders’ Programme. Since its launch in 2011, more than 70 participants from 40 countries have taken part in the week-long course. 18 maritime leaders are participating in the programme this year.

Repositioned in 2014 to be a full-fledged academy with a focus on global maritime leadership development, the MPA Academy has since ran two new flagship programmes: The Advanced Maritime Leaders Programme, a global maritime leadership programme targeted at the C-suite level and the Port Management Programme for port masters, harbour masters and middle managers from maritime and port authorities.

The working group, which also includes the SGX and the Singapore Shipping Association(SSA) in its membership, is said to be intended to help Singapore become a maritime financial hub, a crucial part of the MPA’s plan to make Singapore a leading international maritime centre, said a MPA spokesperson.

“The new dedicated training facility at MPA Academy will provide opportunities for maritime leaders and professionals to come together to share their best practices, exchange maritime knowledge, and network with one another.

The academy has been running various training programmes, mainly focusing on global maritime leadership development.
