The Landing School has developed five scholarships totaling $80,000 for students who wish to have a career in the marine industry but struggle to meet educational financial obligations.
These scholarships have an application process where students are given the chance to show school faculty and staff who they are and why they want to join the marine industry by answering several questions via a medium of their choice. Applicants can choose to answer the questions in a video, essay, or in any other form of communication that they enjoy most.
“These scholarships were designed to support those members of our community, near and far, who have the greatest desire to join the marine industry but may not have the ability to fund their education. As educators, it’s our job to do whatever we can to ensure we’re helping any student achieve their life and career goals,” said Dr. Richard Schuhmann, Landing School President. “One of the greatest aspects of working in the marine industry is that our graduates can quite literally live and work anywhere in the world. They may decide to crew on a yacht, start their own shop, design yachts, work in tourism, work with kids, and the list goes on. We want to connect people with the job they’ve always wanted no matter where it takes them.”
The Imagination, Initiative, Invention (i3) Scholarship is a competitive scholarship that is awarded based on an applicant’s ability to illustrate their creative skill by building an object of their choice. Applicants can literally build anything they want. Their submissions should be in the form of a 3-5 minute video where the student describes three things: what they built, how they built it and why they built it.
Award amount: Three scholarships, $5,000 each. Submission deadline: June 22. Award date: July 17.
The Women in the Marine Industry Scholarship will be awarded to women who want to pursue an education and career in the marine industry. The scholarship requires applicants to answer three questions via a medium of their choice. The questions are: What was the most challenging task you have overcome? Why are you passionate about being part of the marine industry? What would you like to do once you complete your time at The Landing School?
Award amount: Three scholarships, $10,000 each. Submission deadline: June 22. Award date: July 17.
The Southern Maine Coastal Community Scholarship supports applicants who reside in the southern coastal region of Maine. The scholarship requires applicants to answer three questions via a medium of their choice. The questions are: What’s your favorite thing about working with your hands? How would you mix technology with construction to create a better product? If you could pick your job, where would you live and what would you be doing?
Award amount: Three scholarships, $5,000 each. Submission deadline: June 22. Award date: July 17.
The Scholarship Endorsed by Alums (SEA) is awarded to an applicant who is referred by an alumnus of The Landing School. The submission should include a letter of recommendation from a Landing School alumnus. The scholarship requires applicants to answer three questions via a medium of their choice. The questions are: How did you meet the alum who referred you and how has that person impacted your life? What made you decide that you wanted a life focused on boats? Who is your hero and why?
Award amount: Three scholarships, $5,000 each. Submission deadline: June 22. Award date: July 17.
The Landing School Family Scholarship is awarded to an applicant who was referred by a Landing School faculty or staff member. The scholarship requires applicants to answer three questions via a medium of their choice. The questions are: What is the coolest project you’ve ever built or worked on? Would you prefer to have a career where you’re building or fixing things or one where you’re dreaming of what might be possible in the future? If you could build or design anything, what would it be and why?
Award amount: One scholarship, $5,000. Submission deadline: June 22. Award date: July 17.
Prospective students may apply for as many of these scholarships as they choose, but can only win one. Only first year students may apply. If the eligibility requirements for the scholarship are not met the scholarship will not be awarded. Submissions or inquiries should be sent to Susan Gross at
