July 10, 2013

The Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA) announced its summer Professional Development educational events for 2013 which includes workshops, webinars, courses and field trips. The program concludes with the two-day Introduction to Commercial Inland Marine Insurance course in September.

In making the announcement, Kevin O’Brien, IMUA President & CEO, said, “We have prepared a variety of educational opportunities for both members and non-members alike to explore over the summers months. The programs selected are among the most requested topics and present an excellent opportunity for professional development for those new to the industry, as well as those seeking to simply sharpen their skills.”

The IMUA summer Professional Development schedule kicks off with a one-day workshop jointly sponsored with AIMU on Thursday, July 25, 2013 in New York with Learn to Negotiate. Presented by Robert Dunn, trial lawyer, arbitrator and leadership coach, the workshop will cover the fundamentals of successful negotiation, methods of preparation and listening and communicating with confidence.

Understanding Security Seals is a one-hour webinar presented by Barry Tarnef, Senior Loss Control Specialist, Chubb Marine Underwriters, on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. This session will cover types of seals and their unique qualities, the vulnerability of seals, standards, testing and practices for application, as well as emerging trends.

A walking tour of the Joseph A. Balzano Marine Terminal in NJ, the number one plywood port in the U.S., and a look inside a large cocoa warehouse, will be the two stops of the August 7, 2013 day-long field trip. Jointly sponsored with AIMU, participants will learn the administrative processing procedures, as well as observe the equipment used in loading and unloading the port. In addition, those in attendance will learn how these materials are delivered, handled and stored.

The Transportation Brokers webinar will be held on August 13, 2013. This hour-long webinar will discuss understanding third party intermediaries, exposure and liability for the full service provider, evaluating underwriting risks and claims, and how to protect your subrogation rights against the motor carrier.

Concluding the summer schedule is IMUA’s two-day Introduction to Commercial Inland Marine course, given on September 19-20, 2013. This is the basic course for those relatively new to commercial inland marine insurance. The course will provide a detailed industry overview including the nationwide marine definition, filed vs. non-filed classes of business, and the basics of policy construction. Other subjects to be covered are understanding loss mitigation and the basics of claims adjusting. Specific modules on transportation, builders risk, contractors’ equipment and fine arts will be presented.
