IJmuiden Preps for No-deal Brexit

March 15, 2019

To keep traffic flowing around the ferry terminal in IJmuiden Seaport, Netherlands, in the event of a no-deal Brexit, preparations are underway for a temporary lorry parking location.

According to a press release from the Port of Amsterdam Authority, a plan is also being drawn up to ensure that traffic flows smoothly. The measures are intended to minimise delays caused by additional customs formalities at the ferry terminal and to secure the transit of goods to and from the UK.

The measures are intended to minimise delays caused by additional customs formalities at the ferry terminal and to secure the transit of goods to and from the UK.

Together with the municipality of Velsen and the IJmuiden Seaport, the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management is setting up a parking location at the 'Blokkenterrein' (storage area of Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management) at Zandvoortstraat in IJmuiden.

This is where lorries can temporarily go if their customs documents are not in order for sea transport to and from the United Kingdom (UK). This may be necessary if the UK leaves the European Union as expected on 29 March 2019, leading to additional customs formalities.

The car park is only open to lorries that have no access to the ferry in the port of IJmuiden. At this temporary location, lorry drivers can complete the necessary formalities in consultation with their client or transport planner without causing any road congestion. The temporary parking facility will have enough space for 35 lorries and will have fences, lighting, sanitary facilities and security.

A traffic plan has been drawn up with measures to limit the potential nuisance caused by lorries. This traffic plan will ensure that local and regional traffic is kept moving by guiding freight traffic that does not have the necessary papers to a designated parking location and by preventing queues from forming at Halkade and Dokweg in IJmuiden.
