NYK Group Celebrates Successful O3 Challenge

July 24, 2018

Symphony Creative Solutions (SCS) an NYK Group company, held a thank you party with Ocean Network Express (ONE) at ONE’s head office to celebrate a successful Ocean of Opportunities Challenge (O3 Challenge), a contest for startups that was conducted from April to June 2018.

Partners including NUS Enterprise and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) were in attendance, and the solutions of the three O3 Challenge winners were introduced.

The O3 Challenge, a worldwide contest aimed at creating new value through open innovation in the maritime industry, was planned and conducted by SCS and ONE, and jointly organized with NUS Enterprise, from April 2018. For the contest, ONE issued seven challenges to simplify work processes, and about 50 startups submitted proposals.

The final selection was conducted on June 6, when ONE selected the top three proposals together with judges from MPA and NUS. From this month, under the support of SCS, a trial for developing solutions suited to actual business operations began at ONE.

ONE and SCS also partnered to participate in MPA’s Smart Port Challenge 2018 to promote innovation in the entire shipping industry.

In accordance with its new medium-term management plan “Staying Ahead 2022 with Digitalization and Green,” the NYK Group seeks to create new value by making use of the latest digital technology, and to encourage innovation and solutions development in the shipping industry.

Symphony Creative Solutions is jointly established in Singapore in March 2016 by the NYK Group, Weathernews Inc., and Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc. to develop and market next-generation solutions in the shipping and logistics fields.

Ocean Network Express is a Singapore-based global container shipping company that began operations on April 1 by integrating the container businesses of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd., Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd., and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha.
