Global Logistics Academy Opens in Long Beach

October 13, 2016

On Wednesday, officials launched the Port of Long Beach Academy of Global Logistics at Cabrillo High School, opening a new pathway to careers in international trade for young students in the city.

The four-year academy, conducted in partnership with the Long Beach Unified School District, was announced in May. The “linked learning” school brings together college prep academics, demanding technical education and work-based training opportunities that prepare students for success in college, their careers and life.

“This is an exciting day,” said Board of Harbor Commissioners Vice President Lou Anne Bynum. “Our goal with the Academy is to inspire students to explore careers in the international trade and goods movement industry right in their backyard. We’d like to thank the school district for teaming up to develop the Port leaders of the future.”

“The Port’s partnership with Cabrillo High School brings real-world lessons to our students,” said LBUSD Superintendent Christopher J. Steinhauser. “By working with major employers like the Port, we’re preparing more students for success in college and in high-paying, high-demand jobs. Thank you to the Port for supporting this important effort.”

The Academy of Global Logistics at Cabrillo High School, located in the vicinity of the harbor, is the Port’s newest effort to support education in Long Beach.

Earlier this year, the Port awarded $59,500 in scholarships to 40 students from Long Beach-area high schools, Cal State Long Beach and Long Beach City College. Since 1993, the Port of Long Beach has awarded scholarships totaling $667,150 to 391 students pursuing careers in international trade and the goods movement industry.
