The first group of candidates has successfully completed the full Protection and Indemnity Qualification (P&IQ). The examination program was launched in 2010 by the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG) to support education in P&I insurance. The successful candidates were presented with their certificates by Grantley Berkeley, Chairman of the IG and of Tindall Riley (Britannia) Limited, at an awards ceremony to mark the candidates’ achievements held on 12th November 2013 at the Watermen’s Hall in London.
The P&IQ is the first course to provide a specialist professional qualification for people who work in P&I. It is a stand-alone qualification but is also accredited by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) to count towards the ACII Advanced Diploma in Insurance qualification. It is made up of seven modules covering all aspects of the work of P&I Clubs and marine insurance, including P&I operations and practice, people, cargo and vessel risks, underwriting and claims management.
The four successful candidates to complete their P&IQ were: Alexander McCooke of Shipowners’ Club, Gordon Robertson of the North Club, Nick Taylor of the Standard Club and Thomas Jacobsen of SKULD.

I expect the P&IQ to become the benchmark qualification for those who wish to go on to be future leaders of the P&I industry”.
Tamsin Mills, Director of CII Accreditation Services, said, “CII accreditation provides formal recognition of the high quality of the International Group of P&I Clubs’ qualification. This is a great example of how the CII works with industry to ensure there are relevant qualification pathways to achieving the ACII.”
Nick Taylor, from the Standard Club, one of the first candidates to complete the P&IQ, said, “This qualification has given me a much stronger grounding in P&I as the exams cover all aspects of the business. I believe that passing the qualification demonstrates a level of knowledge and commitment to the P&I industry and to the ship owners who are the Members of the Clubs. It is already playing an important part in helping me to further my career in the industry.”
