Crowley Scholarships for Four Maine Maritime Academy Students

June 19, 2016

Crowley Maritime Corp.’s Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships have helped to further educational opportunities for four students of Maine Maritime Academy (MMA). The four recipients, J.T. DiGuglielmo, Jordan Harmon, Sean O’Connor and Luke Olson, were chosen based on their excellent grades, demonstrated financial need and plans to pursue careers in the maritime industry.

DiGuglielmo, from Milton, Del., is a junior in the marine transportation operations program, seeking a career as a maritime pilot. Upon graduation, he looks forward to a career at sea and hopes to gain hands-on sea piloting experience prior to graduation.

Harmon, from Homestead, Fla., graduated from the academy this May with a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering technology and his third assistant engineer’s license. While at MMA, Harmon was a regimental commander. He seeks to work on a Crowley tanker upon promotion from his position as a third assistant engineer on deep sea vessels.

O’Connor is a senior from Hampden, Maine, majoring in marine transportation operations. He gained first-hand cadet shipping experience onboard the Crowley-managed, National Glory container ship.

Olson, from Charleston, Maine, is a junior in the marine transportation operations program. He serves as the midshipman commanding officer (CO) of the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) unit in the Strategic Sealift Officer program (SSO) and the cadet chief mate in the regiment. He gained hands-on cadet shipping experience on the chemical tanker Charleston with U.S. Shipping during a summer internship. Through the program, he also received his tankerman’s endorsement for Person-in-Charge (PIC) and looks forward to working on a tanker upon graduation. Olson is also involved with peer tutoring and has played on the academy’s golf team for the past three seasons.
