Crowley Joins Clean Cargo Working Group

November 2, 2016

Crowley Maritime Corp. has joined the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG), a global, business-to-business initiative dedicated to reducing the environmental impacts of global goods transportation and promoting responsible shipping. Membership in the group underscores Crowley’s practice of prioritizing and utilizing technology and operations that are friendly to the environment, and of joining partnerships focused on reducing vessel emissions.

“We are excited about the opportunity to join other leading cargo carriers and shippers in this collaborative, industry-shaping initiative,” said Crowley’s Dan Smith, environmental director. “Clean Cargo Working Group membership is an important part of our strategy to align Crowley’s measurement and management of environmental performance with industry best practices and to better serve Crowley customers who are working to improve environmental performance throughout their supply chains.”

Crowley’s membership in CCWG will provide the company an opportunity to benchmark its ocean container transportation environmental performance, and easily report on this performance to customers in a standardized, well established format. Membership will also provide Crowley the opportunity to contribute to the further development of consistent, practicable, value-added metrics and methodologies for measuring environmental performance in ocean transportation.

Clean Cargo Working Group membership builds on Crowley’s existing emission-reducing business practices and industry-group participation, the most recent examples being:

Construction of two of the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered combination container – Roll-On/Roll-Off (ConRo) ships - Using LNG as a fuel source allows the ships to emit fewer sulfur oxides (SOx), fewer nitrogen oxides (NOx) and less particulate matter than would be emitted by ships burning conventional fuel oils.

Commitment to robust enforcement of existing fuel sulfur restrictions through membership in the Trident Alliance, a collaboration of shipping owners and operators who share an interest in maritime sulfur regulations.

Crowley’s Seattle-based naval architecture and engineering firm, Jensen Maritime, designed a new high performance tractor tug in 2016 for Vessel Chartering LLC that features some of the first Tier IV engines meeting higher federal air emissions standards among U.S. tugboats.

“Crowley prioritizes enriching lives and supporting innovation. Partnering with members of the Clean Cargo Working Group to drive improvements in the environmental performance of container shipping is one way Crowley can deliver on this purpose,” Smith said.

“Active carrier engagement and collaboration is key for CCWG to succeed in its efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of global goods transportation.  We’re delighted to welcome Crowley as a member of CCWG and look forward to the company’s contributions to CCWG’s important work,” said Angie Farrag-Thibault, director at BSR (Business for Social Responsibility) and lead coordinator of the CCWG.
