Cloud MRV Collects Data for IMO-DCS Regulation

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced a mandatory Data Collection System (DCS) for international shipping, which requires ships above 5,000 gross tonnage to start collecting and reporting fuel consumption and CO2 data to an IMO database from 2019.

To help companies comply with the new regulation, German software provider Hanseaticsoft has updated its Cloud MRV module to allow companies to capture and report the data required for IMO-DCS in the same place. This solution is available as a single app or integrated into Hanseaticsoft’s ship management platform, Cloud Fleet Manager free of charge for existing customers.

Like the EU MRV regulation that came into force in January 2018, the IMO-DCS has been developed to sustainably monitor and reduce emissions by measuring CO2 emissions in the maritime industry. EU MRV and IMO-DCS schemes overlap in various areas, with the IMO-DCS regulation covering the rest of the world.

The new regulation defines guidelines for monitoring, reporting and verifying CO2 emissions for vessels with more than 5000 GT. IMO-DCS data will be reported to a ship’s flag state after the end of each calendar year and then it will be verified to ensure it has been reported in accordance with the requirements before a statement of compliance is issued for the ship.

Customers using the Cloud MRV will be able to easily capture and analyze data using one system and have quick and easy access to reports about the fleet at any time. As data can be entered directly on board – it will save the crew time.

The data collection requirements include the origin and destination information; the amount of fuel consumed in total and the emission factors; the amount of CO2 emitted; the distance travelled; time spent at sea, as well as the cargo carried and details of transport work.
