Watson Farley Williams (WFW) advised NYK Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) on the execution on 26 January 2018 of its long-term charter contract with EDF LNG Shipping, a subsidiary of the electricity major, Electricité de France (EDF). The contract is for the chartering of a newly built liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier for seven years, with optional extension periods for up to thirteen additional years. WFW also worked closely with the commercial and in-house legal teams at NYK, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and EDF on the construction arrangements for the vessel for the project.

The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) received a very large crude carrier (VLCC) named “Lawhah” on Thursday, the company said. "Continuing its strong start to 2018, Bahri accepted the delivery of ‘Lawhah to further cement its market-dominant position in crude oil transportation," said a press release. Another large container ship will be added to the fleet of the liner shipping company Hapag-Lloyd. The “Al Jmeliyah” will be handed over to Hapag-Lloyd tomorrow at the shipyard of Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) in South Korea. With a capacity of 15,000 TEU, this ship is classed as an ultra-large container vessel (ULCV). The “Al Jmeliyah” is the last in a series of 17 newbuilds contracted to HSHI by UASC in the summer of 2013. Hapag-Lloyd held a naming ceremony for the first of its five new vessels in its new 10,500 TEU class containerships, Valparaíso Express. Valparaíso Express was named by Rozío Gonzaléz – wife of Andrónico Luksic, Chairman of the Board of the Quiñenco Group – who performed the ceremony at the Terminal Pacifico Sur (TPS) in the port of Valparaíso, where the new ship will call regularly going forward. Bahri Secures Finance for 5 VLCC Newbuilds
The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) has inked a Murabaha Facility Agreement with Riyad Bank over the weekend to fund an order for five very large crude carriers it made with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. The Islamic financing facility was secured with Riyad Bank and is valued at Saudi Riyals 1.425b ($380m). The contract period is 10 years and 6 months including a maximum of 2-year grace period. Bahri signed a contract with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries to build five VLCCs, with an option to build additional five VLCCs, according to a statement published last May.
MacGregorto Optimize Cargo Handling for 5 Container Ships
MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has received an order to provide loose lashings for five 10,500 TEU Hapag-Lloyd container ships under construction in South Korea by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. This order builds on a previous contract, which MacGregor announced in September 2015, and completes the vessels optimised MacGregor cargo handling solution. Explosion in Cargo Carrier in Brazil
A kamsarmax bulk carrier owned by Greece’s Transmed Shipping was hit by an explosion in one of its cargo holds while anchored at Paranagua Port in Brazil. The Paranaguá Port Authority says it received a report at about 3 p.m. The explosion may have been caused by gas generated by the maize kept being under high temperature, combined with recent fumigation gas, or by malpractice of the crew. The 235 meters long vessel remained under observation for 24 hours and was surveyed by technicians regarding the sea worthiness.
